Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) – Gilt Bronze & Ivory Sculpture – Titled “Liseuse” circa 1880

,

An elegant French gilt bronze and ivory sculpture titled La Liseuse (The Reader), by the celebrated French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887).

The finely detailed figure depicts a young woman in elaborate Renaissance-style dress, standing gracefully while reading from a small open book. Her richly ornamented gown features intricate floral decoration, flowing drapery and beautifully modelled folds, complemented by an elaborate headdress. Her delicately carved ivory face and hands provide a striking contrast to the warm gilt bronze finish.

The sculpture is signed A. Carrier-Belleuse on the integral bronze base and retains its original-style title plaque inscribed LISEUSE – Par Carrier-Belleuse (Grand Prix du Salon). The figure rests upon a circular pale onyx base.

A charming example of French Romantic sculpture, combining exceptional decorative detail with the refined craftsmanship associated with the French bronze-making tradition of the late 19th century.
