Antique Pair of Adorable Hand painted Staffordshire Pottery Zebras – circa 1860

, ,

These adorably charming zebras are hand painted with fine details and a landscape base of greenery that would be perfect for display or added to a collection. Beautifully hand modeled, glazed earthenware, standing on grass covered plinths. Each zebra has been caught in motion, trotting with one front leg bent/stepping and resting on the greenery base, as well as their tails flowing. Both are in excellent condition and considering their age c.1860, they must have been loved and well cared for.

No maker’s mark. Most Staffordshire figures made from 1740 to 1900 were produced by small potteries and makers’ marks are generally absent. Lions, giraffes, tigers, zebras and elephants generated huge excitement in the 19th century; popularized by travelling exotic menageries. Many artists could not resist the temptation to turn horses into zebras.
