British George V Sterling Silver (.925) Mug, Chester England Provenance by Silversmith S.W. Smith & Co, Dated 1916
Silver HollowareThis rare sterling silver mug is a superb example of early 20th-century British craftsmanship, bearing the highly sought-after hallmarks of the Chester Assay Office (closed in 1962) . This vessel has a classic Georgian baluster-shaped body with a high-polish finish and an elegant double-scroll handle topped with an acanthus leaf thumb piece, all supported by a flared circular foot.
The piece is fully hallmarked with four stamps: the “Lion Passant” for sterling silver, the three wheat sheaves, sword for “Chester” and the date letter “Q” for 1916. It also bears the maker’s mark “SWS & Co” for the noted firm S.W. Smith & Co.
This heavy quality piece in excellent condition, from the World War I era date is highly collectible due to the desirable Chester provenance.
