British Victorian Landscape Painter George Turner (1841-1910), Large Oil Painting on Canvas “Haytime” Provenance Frederich Thom Gallery

Turner was born in 1841 and he lived his whole life in Derbyshire England. He showed an early talent for music and art and was encouraged by his father Thomas Turner who, although a tailor by profession, was also an art enthusiast. Turner was largely self-taught and went on to become a professional painter at 20 years of age and later a private art teacher. In 1865 he married Eliza Lakin (1837-1900), became a part-time farmer and raised four children. After Eliza’s death in 1900, he later married fellow artist Kate Stevens Smith. He died on 29 March, 1910 and is buried in St James’ churchyard, Derbyshire.

Turner worked in oils and his work serves as a record of the day in Derbyshire. He left a large body of work, a legacy of hundreds of paintings of the English countryside before the coming of industrialization and the motor car. Turner has 22 paintings in national collections in the UK, many of which are in public collections.

This large Victorian landscape is an oil on panel painting of a bucolic Derby landscape entitled “Haytime” is signed by the artist lower right and marked with the artist’s name and title on the frame’s center front plaque. The back has a provenance label ” Frederich Thom Gallery..Toronto”.  

George Turner is a much sought after Victorian artist and is often referred to as “Derbyshire’s John Constable”  because of his great skill in achieving an “elegance” in composition and colour with great atmospheric effects. The level of detail in the “haystacks” is wonderful. This is a rare treat to have such a large painting by this collectible artist.
