Canadian Landscape Oil Painting on Art Board by Thomas Hilton Garside, R.C.A. (1906-1980)
ArtThomas Hilton Garside, R.C.A. (1906-1980) was born in Dunkinfield, England and immigrated to Montreal Canada with his family in 1914. He first studied art under Adam Sheriff Scott in night classes at the Monument National. He later continued his studies at the Art Association of Montreal, studying under Paul Caron.
Primarily a landscape painter, his subjects included scenes from the Laurentian region, Baie St. Paul, Cape Cod, Murray Bay and the Eastern Townships. One painting trip with fellow painter and friend Richard Jack to Newfoundland extended over 3 months! He held exhibitions at the Stevens Art Gallery in 1945, and the Continental Galleries in 1949 and 1955. He also regularly participated in exhibitions of the Royal Canadian Academy, the Ontario Society of Artists and the annual Spring Show of the Art Association of Montreal. Garside was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1945. An article in the Montreal Gazette 1944 noted about Garside that “…It is a strongly painted work of dramatic qualities which reveals the steady progress being made by this young Montreal artist.”
The provenance of this painting titled “Fall”, is well documented on the back to be from “The Estate of Thomas Garside” and even though “unsigned”, it is authenticated by his wife in her own handwriting on the back along with the Kastell Gallery, Westmount Montreal label and attached announcement card. The engraved plaque with ” Thomas Garside R.C.A.” is on the frame center front.
The masterful ability of Garside to capture nature in this “fall” painting shows his amazingly sophisticated colour and dramatic brushwork. A highly collectible painting!
