Canadian Roden Brothers Sterling Silver Early Art Deco Jewelry Box with 3 Leaf-Form Feet, Circa 1930
Gift Ideas, Silver HollowareFounded in Toronto, Canada, on June 1, 1891, by Thomas and Frank Roden, Roden Bros. became a prominent manufacturer of sterling silver hollowware and flatware. The firm became known as Roden Bros. Ltd. in the 1910s. Their products were supplied to high-end jewelers and retailers across Canada, including the Goldsmiths Stock Company of Canada, their exclusive selling agent from 1900 to 1922. The company operated as an independent entity until it was acquired by Henry Birks and Sons in 1953.
Roden Bros. embraced the Art Deco style, which was popular during the 1920s and 1930s. This jewelry box features a circular unadorned shape and an absence of the ornate classicizing motifs of previous eras. A distinctive feature of their Art Deco ring boxes was a raised base design, as shown here by 3 leaf-form feet which provides a modern, sleek appearance. Made from sterling silver and with the company’s specific maker’s mark (an “R” and a lion passant) along with a “Sterling” & “925” stamp.
