Celebrated Silversmith Thorvald Marthinsen of Tønsberg Norway, Trio Spoon Serving Set , Sterling Silver .830 “Telemark Rose” Pattern, 152g, Circa 1920-1950
Silver Serving PiecesThis three-piece spoon serving set features the iconic Telemark pattern, a hallmark of Norwegian design produced by the prestigious Thorvald Marthinsen workshop in Tønsberg, Norway. Each piece is fully hallmarked with the Marthinsen chalice symbol, the 830S silver purity mark, and the NM (Norsk Mønster) stamp, confirming its status as a protected national design.
Dating to the early-to-mid 20th century, the Telemark pattern is one of Norway’s most cherished and classic silver designs, deeply rooted in the traditional folk art of the Telemark region from the 1700s. It is characterized by its elegant, asymmetrical scrollwork and a prominent, multi-petaled flower at the handle’s terminal, which is a silver interpretation of the “Telemark Rose.” This floral motif is a direct tribute to historic Rosemaling, a traditional Norwegian decorative painting style that has adorned wooden heirlooms and architecture for centuries.
The trio is composed of two large serving spoons and one specialized flat-bowled server, totaling a substantial combined weight of 152 grams. The two primary spoons measure 8.125 inches in length with 2.0 inch wide bowls, while the specialized server measures 8.25 inches with a flatter profile (2.25″) designed for delicate vegetables or fish. All three pieces remain in excellent antique condition, retaining crisp decorative details and a beautiful natural luster.
This prestigious trio set offers a rare opportunity to acquire a matching serving collection from one of Norway’s most celebrated silversmiths and part of Norway’s own rural history. It’s been a favourite for weddings and heirlooms of Norway for over a century.
