Classic Canadian Landscape Painter Harold Owen McAvoy (1871–1977), “Autumn North of Woodbridge” , Signed Oil Painting on Board 10″ x 12″

A vibrant Ontario autumn landscape by Canadian painter Harold Owen McAvoy (1871-1977). “Autumn North of Woodbridge” is an oil on board richly coloured landscape scene capturing the countryside north of Woodbridge Ontario at peak fall brilliance, with a sophisticated colour palette, of glowing orange and golden foliage set against a soft blue sky. A rustic split-rail fence guides the eye through a sunlit clearing toward distant rolling hills, evoking the tranquility of rural early 20th-century Ontario.

Harold studied architecture at the University of Toronto in the 1920’s and then went on to teach art at the Danforth Technical School in Toronto. He studied painting at the Ontario College of Art under J W Beatty and Geo. Reid and qualified as a specialist in Art. Harold exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy in Toronto and Montreal, and his work is in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

He loved to paint “en plein air” (onsite) in Northern Ontario; namely Muskoka, Halliburton, Georgian Bay and other areas like Gloucester Mass..

McAvoy was born in 1871 and lived to the remarkable age of 106. He witnessed enormous change in Ontario, yet his paintings preserve the landscape of an earlier era. His works are appreciated for their strong seasonal colour, decorative warmth, and authentic regional character. Signed lower left and presented in an ornate carved frame.

A classic and inviting Canadian landscape, ideal for collectors of Ontario and regional Canadian art.
