“Cleopatra and Her Attendants” – 19th Century Miniature Painting on Porcelain, Signed and Dated 1891
Art, PorcelainsA superb hand-painted miniature on porcelain, depicting Cleopatra and her attendants in a richly detailed interior inspired by 19th-century Orientalist themes. The scene captures the Egyptian queen in luxurious robes, attended by two servants — one playing a lute and the other kneeling beside her — with hieroglyphs and architectural motifs in the background.
The work is beautifully rendered with exceptional colour, precision, and depth, typical of the Vienna-style porcelain miniatures of the late 19th century. Housed in a finely cast and gilded ornate Rococo Revival frame.
To the back is an old handwritten paper label dated 23–7–1891, inscribed in Portuguese, which references “Cleopatra e suas escravas, Chaumier e Paris” — suggesting the piece may have been produced or exhibited in Paris around that date.
Continental Europe (likely France or Austria), circa 1890s.
