Delightful Pair of Oriental Cloisonné Enamel Vases, Early 20th Century

A delight to the “eyes” colour palette, this pair of cloisonné enamel vases have intricate organic designs that focus on floral naturalistic motifs creating a vibrant, very cheerful and pleasurable aesthetic.

The vases are intricately decorated with cloisonné enamel in eight colours depicting floral motifs and flowing linear patterns showcasing an exquisite “pastel pink peony” as the central image on both vases. Finished brass trim to the base and top, these vases are in very good condition, but considering their age one of the two vases has a “small bite” to the side which is not noticeable when on display.

The cloisonné enamel technique involves using fine metal wires to create compartments (cloisons) on a metal surface, which are then filled with coloured enamel powder. Cloisonné often exhibits metalwork that is detailed and meticulously formed with elaborate enamel application. The technique was originally developed in the ancient Byzantine Empire and by the 14th century it had spread to China and Japan. Many pieces reflect the influence of Japanese and Chinese art forms, in their style and subject matter.
