Eclectic & Tall French Sèvres Style Bisque Porcelain Centerpiece with Dragon Handles and Floral Garlands, Inspired by Rococo Revival Taste of Napoleon III, 1870-1890

This impressive late nineteenth-century centerpiece is executed in finely molded white bisque porcelain and reflects the elegant Sèvres revival style popular in France during the later nineteenth century. The piece is formed as a classical urn rising from a circular pedestal base and surmounted by an elaborate shell-form bowl with pierced rim, a design element inspired by Rococo revival taste during the Napoleon III period.

Striking sculptural dragon or chimera handles flank the neck of the vessel. Their elongated snouts, fin-like crests, and finely modeled scales display the refined decorative vocabulary associated with French porcelain workshops influenced by the renowned Sèvres manufactory near Paris, which set the standard for luxury porcelain production from the eighteenth century onward. The lower body is adorned with delicate applied garlands of roses and foliage, deeply undercut and crisply detailed, demonstrating the skill of the porcelain modeler.

The use of bisque porcelain, left unglazed to produce a soft matte finish resembling carved marble, allows the sculptural details to stand out beautifully. This technique was widely used in high-quality European porcelain for decorative objects such as centerpieces, garnitures, and sculptural vases intended for formal interiors.

Based on its design, modeling quality, and decorative motifs, the piece dates to the late nineteenth century, circa 1870–1890, and represents a fine example of French decorative porcelain produced in the Sèvres style.
