Elaborate & Sumptuous American Victorian Era Silver Plated & Engraved Tipping Ice Water or Lemonade Pitcher, Stand & Cup, by Renowned Simpson Hall & Miller, Circa 1880

An American Victorian tipping or tilting ice water or lemonade set with pitcher, stand and cup by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co., a manufacturer based in Connecticut and founded in 1866. By c. 1895 the company operated large factories in Wallingford, and Montreal Canada.  The company was highly regarded and won awards at international exhibitions, including the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876. Their designs have been collected by many American museums, and shown worldwide.
This gorgeous Victorian silver plated tipping set is composed of a sturdy silver plated stand, a large tipping pitcher and a large goblet. The serving pitcher rests on a stand with a hinge that allows it to be suspended and tipped forward for pouring. The design prevents the server from having to lift a heavy, liquid-filled pitcher. The stand has a substantial round base that is tiered and decorated with stylized panels on either side that extend upward to form an arched top panel decorated with an open weave silver floral foliate motif.  The wide bands of floral decoration around the base are repeated twice more in the pitcher design.
The large serving pitcher has a hinged lid and side panels with amazing engraving details depicting an “artist palette with a scenic water landscape” surrounded by “lily pad floral” images, which are repeated in the serving cup. The stand also features a ring at the base to hold the serving cup. The removable center of the stand is clearly engraved on the reverse with Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co.

Simpson, Hall, Miller was known for its highly decorative silver-plated wares, which drew on a variety of popular Victorian influences. Designs from this era can include elements from the Aesthetic Movement, like detailed engravings of flowers and birds. This set is a fine example of Simpson Hall & Miller and in excellent condition.
