Elegant Pair of British “Rococo Revival Style” Sterling Silver Shell Salts by the Renowned The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd, Circa 1931-1937

This exquisite pair of sterling silver salt cellars was crafted by the renowned Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd., a premier British manufacturer formerly located at 112 Regent Street, London. Established in 1880, the firm was celebrated for its high-quality craftsmanship and prestigious Royal Warrants before eventually merging with the Crown Jewellers, Garrard & Co., in 1952. These salts represent the pinnacle of early 20th-century English silver, combining historical prestige with timeless decorative appeal.
The cellars feature a classic scallop shell design, a hallmark of the Rococo Revival style. Each piece is meticulously fluted and rests on three delicate “periwinkle” or ball feet, providing an elegant and stable silhouette for the dining table. While identical in design, this “assembled” pair reflects the common practice of high-end retailers who fulfilled sets from their existing stock; one salt bears the London hallmark for 1931 (q), while the other is dated 1937 (B). Both pieces are fully hallmarked with the Lion Passant, certifying them as .925 sterling silver, and the Leopard’s Head for the London Assay Office. The front has a monogram “B” letter.  The reverse clear, legible marks and date letters provide a documented history from the interwar period.
Whether for a dedicated collector of English silver or as a sophisticated addition to a modern table setting, these shell salts offer a rare blend of functional elegance and documented British heritage.
