Enchanting Buddhist Statue of “Guanyin on a Dragon” in White Jade Stone, Hand Carved, Large, Heavy & Solid
General, Oriental / AsianGuanyin is short for Guanshiyin, which means “The One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World”. Due to the devotional popularity of Guanyin in Asia, she is known by many names, most of which are simply the localised pronunciations. Due to socio-geographical factors, Guanyin can be historically depicted as genderless or adorning an androgynous apprentice. On the 19th day of the sixth lunar month, Guanyin’s attainment of Buddahood is celebrated. Guanyin has been incorporated in other religions, including Taoism and Chinese folk religion.
Some Buddhists believe that when one of their adherents departs from this world, they are placed by Guanyin in the heart of a lotus. Guanyin is often referred to as the “most widely beloved Buddhist Divinity” with miraculous powers to assist all those who pray to her because she is the ” One who perceives the world’s lamentations”. Several large temples in East Asia are dedicated to Guanyin as she is loved by most Buddhist traditions in a nondenominational way.
In Chinese art, Guanyin is often depicted either alone or standing atop a dragon, accompanied by a white cockatoo. The Chinese dragon is an esteemed symbol of the emperor and traditionally symbolizes not only potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods, but also prosperity and good luck, rulers of weather and water riding. Dragons symbolize control over the sea and are part of being the “protector of fishermen and sailors”.
This exquisite white stone statue as shown here Guanyin breathes life into legend. She is seated on a dragon with a bird on her headdress, a masterfully carved sculpture. Balancing the symbolic and a serene wisdom of a buddha, complete with headdress and light flowing robes and jewelry while seated seemingly effortlessly and comfortably on a meticulously detailed and sculpted “intense dragon with scales”. The base is carved to portray the “underworld”, yet she is sublimely at peace with “her hand calming her dragon protector’s head and whose tail is wrapped around her arm”. Highlighting her divine aura, the dragon is ready to defend with its mouth open forming a striking fiery contrast.
The statue’s overall enchanting grandeur and legend make for a focal point in any garden or great room.
