English Burled Walnut Davenport Desk, James Shoolbred & Co. Makers, circa 1860
v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vA very beautiful burled walnut grain throughout this English Davenport desk. The desk having a slant leather top which opens to an interior space with 2 pull out small drawers. The back top with gallery hinges up to reveal ink well and pen space with slots for paper and envelopes. The left side shows 4 ‘dummy’ drawers and the right side has 4 long drawers that open. The Davenport is on 4 brass castors.
The grain of the wood is quite beautiful in this piece – varying light and dark throughout. The interior space under the slant top is a perfect size for a laptop computer.
One drawer is stamped with the furniture maker : James Shoolbred & Co. – a company that started in the 1820’s on Tottenham Court Road in London and expanded in the 1860’s – eventually closing in the 1920’s.
