A rare and wonderful large English hallmarked repoussé sterling silver “easel back” bevelled mirror with a velvet backing.   The maker is William Comyns.

The frame of the mirror is elaborately decorated with birds, flowers, and scrolls. It measures 14 inches wide and stands 19 1/2 inches tall.

English hallmarks for London – dated 1900 and maker’s mark W.C. (Wm Comyns).

There are some slight wear to the silvered mirror but the frame and backing are in very good condition.

William Comyns established his company in London in 1858 after his apprenticeship with George Richards.  The firm, which had become famous for its fine Victorian and Edwardian decorative silver pieces, expanded rapidly and bought new premises in Beak Street and Regent Street. In 1885 William’s sons Charles and Richard joined the company and its name was changed to William Comyns & Sons.   Wm. Comyns mirrors are always of great quality and highly sought after.
