Exquisite Berlin KPM Large Hand Painted Porcelain Plaque, Portrait of a Young Girl with a Vase of Flowers, Late 19th Century
Art, PorcelainsFrom Berlin, KPM (Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur) was the Royal porcelain factory in Germany from the mid 18th century onward. This intriguing portrait of a young girl is hand painted on a KPM porcelain plaque. The young lady is beautifully dressed in luxurious satin fabrics including a head scarf and adorns a pearl necklace. She is in an interior room gazing softly toward the viewer and seems to be interrupted in the midst of arranging the classical vase of flowers. The hand painting has exquisite detail and in excellent condition. The arched frame with decorative moldings of gilt plaster and wood are likely original and in good condition considering the age.
KPM had an entire department in the 19th century dedicated to copying “Old Master ” & German paintings onto porcelain and these would become extremely popular, high quality, ceramic paintings among the growing consumer class. The bigger the plaque, the more technically complex it was to produce, and so the more valuable it was.
A wonderful large example of KPM whose legacy of excellence and artistic innovation has made it a sought-after brand among collectors, art enthusiasts, and those who appreciate fine porcelain.
