Exquisite Brass French Lantern Clock, Circa 1900

Exquisite French lantern clock reproduction, circa 1910.   Crafted from gleaming brass, this timepiece features intricate fretwork panels that adorn the top three sides of its lantern-shaped frame. The front upper panel has engravings of two fish. The brass lantern case consists of 4 round corner columns with baluster-shaped bases and capitals and one door at the back. The bell is topped with 4 bow-shaped hoops and crowned by a baluster. The clock’s ornate hands gracefully sweep across a finely detailed dial with inlaid black Roman numerals and rich with foliate engravings.
Lantern clocks date from 1655 and historically are referred to as “house clocks” or  “chamber clocks” since in 17th century they were almost the only type of domestic clocks that existed for the nobility. As their original name suggests, they were designed as simple, functional timepieces, used to regulate the daily routine and activities of the household in which they hung. The name “lantern” derived from the rectangular shape of lanterns of that period and like a lantern was hung on the wall.

Typical of brass lantern clocks, the square case is on ball feet. The large circular brass dial extends beyond the case and has two time keeping hands. Originally lantern clocks had only one time keeping hand.  Inside the brass movement is stamped “Made in France, 3831”.

A handsome and masterful reproduction that is a fusion of the original lantern clock’s elegance and an updated more modern functionality of two working hands.
