Extraordinary Viennese Renaissance Revival Silver Sugar Casket, Late 19th Century
Silver HollowareA extraordinary late 19th century Viennese silver sugar casket box in the “Renaissance Revival” style likely from the 1870s. Finely crafted piece with a hinged lid and an extraordinary level of textural detail with repousse and hand chased foliate motifs. The lid features a winged putti finial and the base has a Renaissance architectural-inspired design. The casket box exterior surround is richly decorated with panels of repousse roses, shells and putti. Each of the 4 corners feature a recessed grotto with miniature figural sculptures cast in the form of maidens & soldiers, raised overall upon embossed petal shaped supports. The interior has an original gold wash.
Casket boxes were often made by renowned Viennese foundries like Franz Xavier Bergman and exhibit fine details of engraving motifs and geometric patterns. Truely a remarkable and luxurious piece of fine craftsmanship.
