French Oil Painting on Panel by Louis-Simon Cabaillot-Lassalle (1808-1885) Signed , Winter Scene of “Children Around A Fire”
ArtLouis Lassalle is the painter’s pseudonym name for which he is known, but in fact his surname is Cabaillot. He began his career as a draughtsman and lithographer from 1828-1854. He lived in Paris until 1878 and then moved to Ecouen, a “painter’s colony” outside Paris where he became a member of the association “L’ecole d’Ecouen” . He married and had a son who also became a painter. His first Salon was in 1850 where he presented 3 paintings that earned him a place in the Salon exhibits until his last days. He received government commissions that were visited by Napoleon III and was honoured by the Queen of England who purchased an artwork.
Under the influence of Pierre Edouard Frere, Lassalle turned to genre painting with a particular talent for scenes depicting young children, liking to especially to paint “snow effects”. We see his wonderful talent in the painting presented here, where you can feel the cold and wind around the children warming themselves at a “stick fire”. The painting is signed by the artist on the bottom left and his name is inscribed on the original frame, center front. The provenance is marked on the back of the panel “COOLING GALLERIES” LONDON.
Truely a historically significant artist who frequented the Salon with painters like Dominique Ingres, Louis Isabey, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and together protested the idea of the invention of photography as art.
