Grand Rococo French Clock with Gilt Bronze Figural Grouping – the God Pan, Satyr & Nymph. Silk Suspension Movement – Circa 1840
GeneralA grand, exquisite clock and a wonderful example of the French Rococo period. A “salon” treasure, this 28 inch gilt bronze figural clock features 3 dynamic figures – The mythological figure of the God Pan centred between a Satyr (half man/ half beast) on the left and a “nymph” woman figure on the right. Pan allegorically personifies “lust” and owes his reputation to the seduction of nymphs. The figures form a triangular design that surround the clock face with Pan at the apex or the “central” character to the allegory. The figural grouping is supported by a Rococo base that has a central ewer with overflowing wine, grapes and grape leaves that flow down with fruit and split to the left and right near the bottom. A dead animal also hangs just below the ewer. The clock face has enamelled Roman Numeral numbers. The movement has a chime that strikes on the hour and the half hour and the pendulum is held by a silk suspension. The movement is marked initials CM.
