Impressive Antique Canadian Roden Brothers 1920s Sterling Silver 6 Piece Tea Service: Coffee, Tea, Cream & Sugar, “Spirit” Tilting Kettle Plus a Large Birks Sterling Tray
Silver HollowareImpressive 1920s, Canadian made Roden Brothers sterling tea service of 6 pieces that includes a tilting “spirit” kettle plus a large Birk’s sterling silver tray. Gorgeous design details of raised bases and silver engraving scrollwork. The teapot, coffee pot and kettle engraving is wonderfully elegant to include master craftsmen details of extending these “by hand” embellishments over the flush mount hinged lids with ebony wood finials and generous handles.
A “spirit” kettle is a teapot or kettle that sits upon a stand and has a burner beneath it. The burner usually burned alcohol, hence the “spirit” in its name. This was a popular Victorian and Edwardian accessory. It allowed one to move the tea meal to just about anywhere. The spirit kettle was usually ornate, with scrollwork and filigree, meant to compliment the rest of the silver or tea accessories. As in this set, the “spirit” tilting kettle with a generous ebony handle matches the set as an “extra teapot” with the added feature of the kettle having a locking system of 2 sterling “keys” that allows functional flexibility of tilting or removing the kettle from the stand. The elegant sterling warming burner has a sterling silver lid and arm to close over the wick.
All the set pieces have Roden Bros Ltd.’s marks that include “Sterling”, “925”, an “R” and a “lion passant”. The sterling Birk’s tray is a large and wonderful size with very generous handles, similar scrollwork and four silver button feet. Marked “Birk’s Sterling “.
A few unique items that Roden Bros. Ltd. produced were a gold rose bowl with the royal route across Canada engraved on it for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939, a tea service for Princess Elizabeth’s wedding in 1947 and they were attributed to helping with the production of the Stanley and Grey Cup.
This impressive tea service is “all about the design details” , not monogrammed and in excellent condition. Truly a unique opportunity not only for a piece of Canadian history but to be a part of your personal family lineage.
