Impressive European Walnut Gothic Revival Period Buffet, Generous Scale & Storage, Circa 1870s
FurnitureImpressive 19th Century Gothic Revival Period European walnut buffet that draws on medieval Gothic architecture, in that the facade focuses on creating an exemplary representation of the period. Gothic Revival furniture was a popular and distinct style in 1870s, as part of a broader movement in the decorative arts in Europe and reached its height in the late 19th century. Culturally, the style was rooted in a sense of religious and social conservatism, with proponents believing in the moral and spiritual value of medieval art and architecture.
This buffet combines form and function with its very tailored refined architectural details in luxurious walnut and generous functional top serving surface and double lockable storage cabinets. The gorgeous and large door panels of walnut overlayed with trim in gothic motifs and framed on each side by verticals of hand carved wood echo “gothic revival” architectural design elements. Two equally sized wide doors open to reveal cavernous storage. To the left side is open storage with a shelf for large serving pieces and on the right 5 large interior fitted “walnut front” pull drawers, with the top drawer having 5 sections for cutlery and linen items.
Dating to the 1870s, and in excellent condition this is a timeless piece that emphasizes craftsmanship, utility and a fine example of the Gothic Revival period.
