Impressively Grand, Victorian English Sheffield Silver Plate Meat Dome with Hot Water Tray, by Mappin Brothers, Circa 1850

This very grand, good quality Sheffield silver plated “meat dome & hot water tray” is by the Mappin Brothers of Sheffield England, Circa 1835-1850. Lovely ornate and detailed cast decoration on the handles, the skirt and supporting feet.  The rich silver motifs extend from the scrolling feet and handles to the rims and even the finial to give this vessel a truly luxurious touch. The serving dish, which could be used for a variety of delectable meats, is complete with its original silver plate dome cover (interior lined in tin/pewter)  and a liner tray that allowed the base to be filled with hot water to keep the entrée piping hot at the table.

The “sun” and “Mappin Brothers”  hallmarks on the base testify to it’s sturdy nature and the splendid decoration allowed the beauty of silver to be enjoyed beyond the world of the wealthy, effectively making Sheffield silver plate the most successful silver substitute in history.
