Large American – Middletown Silver Co. Silver-Plated Butler’s Serving Tray – dated 1876

A large and unusual American silver-plated butler’s serving tray by the Middletown Plate Co., dating to the late 19th century.

The tray was thoughtfully designed for service, with a deeply curved inner edge shaped to rest comfortably against the server’s waist. This allows the tray to be carried securely while the substantial side handles provide additional control.

Each handle is especially decorative, formed as an arched frame flanked by seated putti or cherub figures. The broad tray surface is finely engraved with scrolling ivy, floral ornament and a central architectural cartouche bearing a presentation inscription. A richly patterned border completes the elaborate Victorian design.

The underside is stamped “Middletown Plate Co.,” “Quadruple Plate” and “Hard White Metal,” together with the model number 885 and a patent date from 1876.

A striking and highly functional example of American Victorian silver plate, distinguished by its generous scale, waist-fitting form and unusual sculptural figural handles.
