Large French Louis XV–XVI Transitional Marquetry Commode, Circa 1780
FurnitureAn impressive French Louis XV–XVI Transitional commode, dating to the late 18th century, circa 1780.
This beautifully proportioned commode features a richly figured wood-veneered case decorated with geometric marquetry, contrasting string inlay and decorative brass hardware. The arrangement of twelve drawers, comprising three smaller drawers across the upper section and nine larger drawers below, provides generous storage while maintaining an elegant and symmetrical design.
The commode is surmounted by a substantial, beautifully veined red marble top with moulded edges, complementing the warm tones of the wood veneers.
Constructed using traditional cabinetmaking techniques, the piece retains substantial solid-wood secondary construction, with hand-cut dovetail joints and visible signs of age consistent with its 18th-century origins.
An elegant and practical example of French Transitional furniture, equally suited to a dining room, entrance hall or bedroom.
