An impressive pair of 18th-century English carved giltwood torchères or pedestal stands, designed in the bold Palladian manner associated with the celebrated architect and designer William Kent.

Of exceptional scale, each torchère stands approximately 60 inches high and is surmounted by a circular platform above a richly carved architectural stem incorporating classical female terms, scrolling acanthus foliage, geometric ornament and deeply carved decorative details.

The tapering central shafts descend to substantial tripod bases formed with boldly scrolling supports terminating in large voluted feet. Their strong architectural proportions, classical figures and exuberant carving are characteristic of the Palladian taste fashionable in England during the George II period.

The gilt surfaces retain an attractive aged patina, with areas of wear revealing the warm reddish bole beneath the gilding. Minor losses, restoration and surface wear are consistent with age and contribute to their authentic period appearance.

Standing nearly five feet tall, the pair has tremendous decorative presence and would be particularly striking flanking a doorway, fireplace or console, or supporting urns, sculpture, lamps or other important decorative objects.
