Large Oil on Canvas – “Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia” – by Julius Marosan (1915-2003)

The “infamous Canadian” destination of “Peggy’s Cove”  is the subject of this picturesque piece of “maritime heaven”. A very large oil painting by Canadian/Hungarian artist Julius Marosán (1915-2003) is in excellent condition with a handsome wood frame.

Born in Hungary in 1915, Marosán emigrated to Canada in 1957. Marosán was taught by Vilmos Aba-Novak, a highly regarded representative of modern Hungarian art.  Key influences included Pablo Picasso, Jean Paul Riopelle and the “Painters Eleven”,  contemporaries of Marosán. Over his lifetime, Marosán’s work shows a wide range of “style” and “subject matter”  from realistic landscapes (pictured here) to large abstract expressionistic pieces.

His paintings were recognized by noted critics such as Pearl McCarthy as being of the same calibre of Canadian abstract painters such as the “Painters Eleven” group which included the likes of Jack Bush, William Ronald, Hortense Gordon, Jock Macdonald, Oscar Cahen and Harold Town.

The art of Julius (Gyula) Marosán is actively collected by private art collectors and prestigious galleries throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe including these distinguished venues: The Art Gallery of Ontario, Art History Museum Vienna, Museum of Fine Arts Vienna, Museum of Fine Arts Budapeste, The Hague The Netherlands and The National Gallery of Canada. Sales examples for this artist at auction, include $32,320 USD for “Amongst The Mountains”  in 2014 and $26,387 USD for “Landscape With Houses”  in 2017, both sold at Kieselbach Gallery & Auction House Budapest.
