Late Victorian / Art Nouveau American Estate Sterling Silver Large Serving Fork , Gorgeous Chrysanthemum Pattern by Renowned Maker William B. Durgin & Retailer Cowell & Hubbard, Circa 1895
Silver Serving PiecesExceptional sterling silver salad serving fork manufactured by the renowned William B. Durgin Company in the iconic Chrysanthemum pattern. Originally patented in 1893, this pattern is celebrated for its intricate, high-relief Art Nouveau floral motifs. This specific piece was retailed by the prestigious Cleveland jewelry firm Cowell & Hubbard and bears both the maker’s hallmark and the retailer’s stamp. Measuring 9.5 inches in length and weighing a substantial 138 grams, the fork features a large, 3.25-inch scalloped bowl finished with its original gold wash. This vermeil finish remains vibrant, offering a luxurious contrast to the heavy-gauge sterling silver while protecting the metal from reactive food acids. The handle is densely decorated with blooming chrysanthemum blossoms and organic, flowing foliage that transitions elegantly into the serving end. Monogrammed on the front and marked to the back “Sterling 925/1000 Patent” , ” Cowell & Hubbard” & “D”.
This piece is a premier example of late Victorian craftsmanship and remains in excellent condition for the discerning collector of fine American estate silver.
