The company’s origins date back to about 1680, when the silversmith Anthony Nelme (d. 1722) established a firm in Ave Maria Lane, London. Edward Barnard was first manager and in 1829 became the proprietor, trading as Edward Barnard & Sons, with his sons Edward Barnard, John Barnard and William Barnard. In 1838, they moved to Angel Street, London. One of their most important commissions was the “Lily Font” by Queen Victoria in 1840 for the christening of their first child Princess Victoria.
This is a service has the most exquisite decoration, of lobed squat forms on leaf cast scrolled splay feet with scrolled foliate capped handles, ribbed spouts and hinged lids, to both the coffee and tea pots. The whole surround is etched in detail with abundant patterns and delicate top floral finials. The stunning and large original oak box (with working key) has handsome brass handles and hardware fittings, and is lined with gorgeous royal blue velvet.
