Magnificent English Hallmarked Sterling Wine Ewer/Jug with Custom Wood Display Case – dated 1872 – Stephen Smith Silversmith
Silver HollowareAn exceptional quality English sterling wine jug/ewer with repoussé decoration throughout the centre of the body and the handle. The finial for lid in the shape of a snake and the centre band of decoration features lions on either side of a pedestal jardiniere filled with grapes with grapevines encircling the body – 2 face masks on either side separate the continuous scene.
The Wine ewer/jug is made by Stephen Smith a notable & prominent silver maker in London in the 19th century.
The ewer/jug has a custom wooden case with fitted interior that was made later for it. The base slides into a fitted base which holds the ewer in place whether it is standing up and laying down for display.
English hallmarks date the jug for 1872
Inscription to under bottom rim “D.C. Rait & Sons, Glasgow” – which may be the company that retailed this magnificent piece.
