Mid 20th Century Canadian Modernist Painter Clifton Wellington Greer (1904-1986), Impressionistic “Autumn Morning” Oil on Masonite Board, Circa 1950

This masterfully executed mid-century Canadian impressionist landscape painting captures the vibrant brilliance of a northern autumn morning, painted by the Toronto artist Clifton Wellington Greer (1904-1986). He studied art at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) under great artists like: Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. MacDonald of the famous Canadian “Group of Seven”, L.A.C. Panton, Frederick Haines, etc. The focus of his works are landscape oil paintings.
Rendered in oil on a sturdy Masonite board, the composition features a prominent grove of slender white birch trees lining a rocky shoreline, their golden and amber leaves standing in vivid contrast against a striking turquoise-blue body of water. Greer’s bold, textured impasto brushwork builds incredible depth and movement across the forest floor, which is blanketed in rich crimson, orange, and copper foliage. The artist studied at the Ontario College of Art under legendary members of the Canadian Group of Seven, including Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. MacDonald, an influence beautifully reflected in this piece’s expressive handle on natural light, atmospheric clouds, and raw wilderness design. Signed clearly by the artist in the lower-left corner as C.W. Greer, the painting is housed in its original, substantial period-correct ornate swept gilt frame featuring elaborate acanthus leaf corner flourishes and decorative shell moldings.
Clifton Greer believed that “a great painting, should hold the mirror up to life, reflecting an enhanced beauty, i.e. truth without distortion.”  He held exhibitions in Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and other parts of Canada where “he is recognized throughout the country for his magnificent Canadian landscape. Exhibiting excellent structural preservation with no paint loss, cracking, or surface degradation, this original oil painting stands as a classic representation of twentieth-century “plein-air” inspired Canadian landscape tradition.
