Pair of 19th Century French Giltwood Mirrors with Sèvres-Style Porcelain Plaques

,

A magnificent pair of late 19th-century French giltwood mirrors, each surmounted by an exquisite hand-painted Sèvres-style porcelain plaque.

The oval plaques are finely decorated with cherubs, floral garlands, and a central monogram, all framed within a rich “bleu céleste” (turquoise) ground and surrounded by elaborate gilt scrollwork. The plaques bear multiple factory and decorator marks — including “Sèvres 1844” in blue, the “Château des Tuileries” red medallion, and a crowned “SV LP 40” mark in black — typical of high-quality Paris porcelain made in the Sèvres manner circa 1880–1890.

The carved giltwood frames are executed in the Rococo Revival / Louis XV style, featuring scrolling acanthus leaves, floral sprays, and shell motifs, with the lower mirror sections framed by slender bamboo-form borders. The craftsmanship and proportion are superb, combining the delicacy of the porcelain painting with the grandeur of French gilded carving.
