Pair of Framed and Matted Orientalist Scene Watercolours By Frederick Varley, 1881-1969 (Canadian Group of Seven Artist) – Signed F. Varley

A wonderful pair of framed and matted orientalist scene watercolours by the Canadian artist, Frederick Valley (1884-2016). Mr Varley was one of the founding members of the Group of Seven artists in 1920.  The paintings depict figures in Arab dress standing on sand in front of water and an island with a boat in front of the palm trees.

The paintings are signed “F. Varley” in black ink in the lower right hand corner of the painting.  Varley was born in Sheffield, England in 1881 and didn’t emigrate to Canada until 1912.  He studied art in Sheffield and attended the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, Belgium in 1900-1902.

It is said he painted these Egyptian scenes early in his artistic career as the interest in Egypt at the time was popular and these were very commercial.

The paintings with frames measure 8 1/2 inches wide x 13 inches tall. They are the same size. The watercolours are 4 inches wide x 8 inches tall.

Original labels on back of each “EJ Morden 1064A London Road, Norbury”.  Also one hand written on back in pencil “Frederick Horsman Varley”

Both are in very good condition with bright colouring.  Please note that the white on the paintings is just a reflection of light and is not on the paintings themselves.
