Palatial and Opulent French Sevres Style Urn, Hand Painted Continuous Scene by Jacob Petit (1796-1868) Mid 19th Century
PorcelainsThis exceptional and palatial French Sevres style porcelain urn, is hand painted and signed to the body by the artist Jacob Petit (1796-1868). Originally from Paris, he began as a self-taught artist, then became a pupil of the painter Antoine-Jean Gros, who in turn was a pupil of the celebrated Neoclassical French painter Jaques Louis David. His passion for porcelain led him to join the Sèvres Manufactory in 1822, and later opening one of his own porcelain manufactory “Petit Factory”, with over 80 workers near Fontainbleau.
Later he moved the factory to Paris and in less than 10 years, had hired about 200 people to make and decorate porcelains. They made ornamental vases, statues, clocks, inkwells and perfume bottles. He made copies of Sevres vases, Meissen figurines, patterns of English dinnerware, Chinese export porcelain and more. The copies often are mistakenly identified as original old pieces.
