Silver HollowarePalatial English William IV sterling tea set by silversmith John Edward Terrey, London, 1836. John Edward Terrey was an important English silversmith producing mainly tableware and presentation pieces. Terrey entered his own mark as a plateworker, registering the address: Foster Lane. In 1819, Terrey moved to Hatton Garden, where he stayed until 1852, after which he moved to Lewisham, Kent. His death is recorded in 1859.
The set consists of four pieces: a tea and coffee pot, a large open sugar bowl and creamer. The design is wonderfully ornate with heavily chased and stippled repousse work featuring floral and foliate motifs. The hinged lid with applied floral finials, curved spout and ornate handles that include small ivory inserts. All pieces are on decorative floral feet and hallmarked marked on the base.
An interesting monogram on each piece in the set is an engraving of a seated “greyhound” which could represent the original owner’s family emblem.
A very distinguished palatial tea/coffee service, all in excellent condition.
