Passionate Royal Copenhagen Large 18.5 inch Porcelain Sculptural Group of “Prometheus & A Sea Nymph”, Designed by Theodor Lundberg (1852-1926)
Figurines, PorcelainsFrom Royal Copenhagen, circa mid 20th Century, a large and very dynamic porcelain sculpture of “Prometheus & A Sea Nymph”. It was originally designed by Theodor Lundberg (1852-1926), then produced by Royal Copenhagen. Also known as “Couple Kissing By The Sea”, “TheKiss”, “Wave and Rock” and “Man and Woman by the Sea”.
The sculpture depicts in Greek mythology “Prometheus” who is responsible for creating or aiding humanity in its earliest days. He defied the Olympian gods by taking fire from them and giving it to humanity in the form of technology, knowledge and, more generally, civilization. The punishment of Prometheus for stealing fire from Olympus and giving it to humans is a subject of both ancient and modern culture. Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, condemned Prometheus to eternal torment for his transgression. Prometheus was bound to a rock with his arms behind his back. This is the subject of this porcelain group where a nymph maiden rises from the waves to kiss the young man, Promethius who was eventually freed by the hero Heracles.
Originally designed in 1897 by renowned sculptor Theodor Lundberg, the sculpture captures the raw passion and drama of nature and human emotion. Delicate modeling of the human figures in naturalistic flesh tones contrasts the deep cobalt of the water creating a rich and dramatic “visual story”. This iconic sculpture stands as one of Royal Copenhagen’s most emotionally charged and technically accomplished creations. An extraordinary and museum-worthy showpiece that embodies the passion, power, and elegance of turn-of-the-century Danish porcelain artistry. The base is marked with the Royal Copenhagen underglaze green crown and triple wave hallmark, along with the model number.
