Rare and Fascinating American Handel Table Lamp with Reverse Hand Painted Glass Shade, Circa 1920

, ,
The Handel Company, established in 1885 by Philip J. Handel, was a leading producer of lamps in the early 20th century, particularly known for their reverse-painted shades. Handel prioritized artistry, collaborating with local artists who contributed to the uniqueness of the design and painting of the lamp shades. Handel lamps were popular as a more affordable alternative to Tiffany lamps, and the company had a showroom in New York City. However, they struggled during the Great Depression and closed in 1936.
Today, the name Handel is most closely associated with the reverse painted shade. Reverse painting is a technique where the artist paints on the back of a glass panel, so that the image appears correctly when viewed from the front. Handel’s craftspeople used this technique to paint detailed scenes on the conical-shaped lamp shades, creating a visual effect that was both artistic and functional. The process was highly precise, with details usually painted one colour at a time, and the glass was often textured to enhance the visual effect. The use of reverse painting made Handel lamps a hallmark of quality and artistry, and the technique became a defining feature of the company’s products.
Handel lamps like this example is intricately hand painted on the inside with a very colourful band of a woodland scene of  “blue birds” and “wild rose” flowers. Gorgeous pastel yellow interior with stripes that tie the band to the circular bronzed lintel design on top. Signed on the interior “HANDEL 6930”. Circa 1922, with a triple socket and circular bronzed base, all in excellent condition.
A rare and fascinating Handel lamp, highly collectible and perfect for those who love very “special” lighting that are works of art.
