Rare & Exquisite 18th Century George II Miniature Burr Walnut Kneehole Desk 1720-1750
Furniture, GeneralThis rare and finely crafted miniature kneehole desk is a superb example of an apprentice piece or a traveling salesman’s sample, capturing the grandeur of early 18th-century George II (c. 1730-1750) furniture in a compact, tabletop form. The piece is masterfully veneered in highly figured burr walnut, showcasing the dramatic swirling grain and “pip” clusters prized by Georgian cabinetmakers. The wood has aged to a beautifully mellowed golden-honey patina, a characteristic of authentic antique walnut that has lightened over centuries. The top and drawer fronts are elegantly finished with cross-banded borders, a hallmark of high-quality period craftsmanship.
The design is a traditional arrangement featuring one long frieze drawer above six smaller side drawers, flanking a central recessed “kneehole” cupboard. Raised on classic bracket feet with a molded base, providing a sturdy and balanced silhouette. The period-style brass ring handles adorn each drawer and the kneehole cabinet door, complementing the warm tones of the walnut. This miniature retains the exacting proportions and functional drawer construction of a full-sized desk.
In the 18th century, such miniature versions were created by master craftsmen as portable “samples” to display their repertoire to prospective clients or by apprentices as a “masterpiece” to prove their skill to their guild. Today, these pieces are highly collectible for their historical charm and “cabinet of curiosities” appeal, not to mention storage for “tiny treasures”.
