Rare & Exquisite Anglo-Indian Stag Antler Horn, Slope Top, Lap Desk, Late 19th Century

,

This Anglo-Indian “stag antler/horn” sloped writing lap desk, is likely from Vizagapatam, which was the headquarters of the British (during the British period mid 1600- 1947) in the District of Madras (now Chennai) in India. This furniture style, known for its carved and inlaid horn work, was sought after during the Victorian era.

The exterior is completely clad with meticulous and time-consuming hand carved strips of bleached deer antler horn. The larger hinged slant-front panel opens to reveal a green felt writing surface with inset “horn veneer” exquisitely patterned surround trim. The top of the writing surface lifts to a wood storage space. The smaller top interior space has 4 ink well sized and 4 small narrow “horn veneer” lidded compartments.

The combination of the rare material (stag antler) and the intricate, all-encompassing carving of this lap desk and that it is in very good to excellent condition, places it in a highly sought-after and collectible category of antiques.
