Rare Pair of Hunting Scenes ‘Gauchos Hunting Rheas’ (wild birds) ‘. Oil on wood panels. Signed Rudolf Stone, c.1910.

An unusual pair of hunting scenes – ‘Gauchos Hunting Scenes With Rheas/Ostrich’, oil paintings on wood panels, and appropriately framed with luxurious gilt gold frames with a deep style and hand-carved design – painted by the British painter, Ruldolf Stone, dates circa, 1910.  Rudolf Stone and his father Robert Stone were known for their British fox hunting scenes with red coat hunters on horses and hunting hounds in a typical British hunt scenes.  Most paintings are of the same long, narrow landscape – 12 inch x 6 inch.

What makes these very unusual from the norm is that these are scenes of South American cowboys (Gauchos) on horseback hunting with bolos weapons and lassos and trying to catch Rheas – ostrich like birds of South American.  Gauchos were highly regarded in Southern South American countries and these were most likely painted in Argentina or Chile.
