French Empire / Biedermeier-Period Mantel Clock by Buffet, Horloger à Paris, c. 1820
GeneralRare French / Biedermeier early 19th-century giltwood mantel clock carved with a pair of expressive mythological sea creatures, variously described as sea dragons or hippocamps, flanking a white enamel Roman numeral dial signed “Buffet, Horloger à Paris.” The carved wooden case, including the barrel housing, retains its original gilding and is raised on a stepped base. The clock retains its brass pendulum and original brass rear cover and houses an 8-day French movement.
An unusual and sculptural Parisian mantel clock, notable for its giltwood construction and dramatic marine imagery, dating from the Empire to early Restoration period.
