Regal & Rare Chamberlain Worcester Armorial Porcelain Dish, Centered Family Crest of a “Wolf” & Shell Shaped, Circa 1820
China Patterns, PorcelainsA regal and rare Chamberlain Worcester “armorial”, center-crested shell shaped dish in excellent condition. A ” kingly” rich combination of stylized “floral” motifs in diamond patterns and black demi-lunes all outlined in gold gilt on an iron red background. The center crest is an armorial or heraldic coat of arms of a “wolf ” in rich iron red encircled with elaborate gold gilt trim patterns. The gold gilt frond moldings on this shell shaped dish also provide for a “handle”.
“Wolf” images appear frequently in English heraldry and are found as both a charge and a supporter. Commonly reviled as “a predator”, the “wolf” was also considered a noble and courageous animal and frequently appeared on the arms of numerous noble families. It typically symbolised the rewards of perseverance or hard work.
This magnificent armorial dish is truly a “rare slice” of not only regal history, but from the history of “Chamberlain Worcester” one of the finest English porcelain makers, circa 1820.
