Spectacular 19th-Century French Louis XV Style “Bonheur du Jour” Desk , “Vernis Martin” Laquer Finish with Hand Painted Pastoral Scenes & Gilt Bronze Mounts, Circa 1880

This exquisite French “Bonheur du Jour” desk is a high-quality 19th-century (circa 1880) revival of the masterful 18th century Louis XV Rococo style. Pieces of this caliber were produced by premier Parisian workshops and remain highly collectible for their historical artistry and decorative impact. This piece captures the opulence of the Belle Époque era, in its graceful, feminine proportions and features a classic serpentine, bombe-shaped silhouette. Supported by elegant cabriole legs, the entire surface is finished in a rich honey-toned wood veneer.

The desk is most notable for its spectacular “Vernis Martin” finish, a celebrated lacquer technique originally perfected by the Martin brothers in the 18th century. This translucent, multi-layered varnish gives the piece a brilliant depth and luster. The desk is further elevated by intricate, hand-painted pastoral scenes—historically known as Fêtes Galantes—which adorn the side panels and drawer fronts. These delicate depictions of romantic landscapes and floral motifs were highly prized by the Parisian elite and remain a hallmark of high-end French cabinetry.
Accenting the hand-painted artistry is a suite of finely cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts. From the pierced brass three-quarter gallery crowning the top to the foliate sabots protecting the feet, the metalwork displays exceptional chiseling and detail. The upper section provides organized storage with a series of five petite drawers and a central open “prospect,” while the lower section features a wide pull-out writing slide inset with a vibrant ochre velvet fabric, offering a perfect blend of decorative beauty and historical utility.
This significant statement piece produced as a high-quality 19th-century revival of the Rococo style, makes it a highly collectible antique. It represents a period when Parisian workshops sought to recreate the splendor of the royal courts, resulting in a piece that is as much a work of fine art as it is a functional furniture item.
