Stunning French Second Empire/ Napoleon III Pair of Gilt Bronze & Cream Onyx Candelabras, Neoclassical / Empire Revival Style, Circa 1860-1880

This luxurious pair of French gilt bronze and cream onyx candelabras, dating to the late 19th century (circa 1860–1880), reflects the refined decorative taste of the Napoleon III period, when richly ornamented bronze objects combined with decorative stones became highly fashionable in Parisian interiors.

Each candelabrum features a finely cast five branching structure in gilt bronze, with gracefully curved arms supporting four decorative candle cups. The stunning bronze work is richly detailed with classical ornament including acanthus leaves, fluting, and beaded borders, all characteristic of the Neoclassical Empire Revival style that was widely favoured during the Second Empire. The central finial and symmetrical arrangement of the arms give the pieces an architectural elegance typical of French decorative bronzes of the period.

The bronze elements rise from slender turned columns of polished cream onyx, a stone prized for its soft translucent tones and natural banding. These columns are set on stepped onyx bases with applied gilt bronze mounts and decorative feet. During the 19th century, Parisian bronziers frequently combined finely cast bronze with ornamental stones such as onyx, to create luxurious table garnitures, clock sets, and candelabra intended for formal salons and dining rooms.

Most likely produced by skilled Parisian bronze workshops and onyx/marble ateliers supplying luxury furnishings to leading retailers and cabinetmakers of the period. Their craftsmanship reflects the high standards of the French decorative arts industry during the second half of the 19th century.

Pairs of French Second Empire bronze and onyx candelabras remain highly sought after and versatile pieces that just add to the luxury of any interior.
