Sumptuously Rich Derby Porcelain Oval Dish Hand-Painted by Richard Dodson, Colourful Exotic Birds Circa 1815
PorcelainsA splendid early 19th century Derby oval porcelain dish beautifully hand-painted by Richard Dodson, with a large central reserve of brightly coloured exotic birds in a wooded landscape, circa 1815. The inside rim of the dish features extensive and elaborate wide gilt work of palmette, scrolls and cornucopia on a white ground. This early Derby is in remarkably good condition for the age and marked on the reverse in iron red over the glaze is the crown, crossed swords, dots and the letter D.
The finely painted birds by Richard Dodson, who was an expert specializing in rendering exotic birds in traditional and rural landscape, has his work documented in the book “British Porcelain: An Illustrated Guide”. Richard Dodson followed in his fathers footsteps, as a painter at the Derby factory, working there between 1813 and 1820.
This early Derby, sumptuously hand-painted by a historically documented porcelain artist is a luxurious addition to any collection.
