Superb Pair of Late 19th century French “Louis XVI Revival” Urn/Table Lamps in Marble & Gilt Bronze, Electrified in the 20th Century
General, LightingA superb and architecturally scaled pair of late 19th century French gilt bronze mounted marble urns in the Louis XVI Revival taste, later professionally converted to table lamps.
Each urn is executed in finely polished cream marble and mounted with richly cast and chased gilt bronze ornamentation of exceptional quality. The bodies are adorned with boldly modeled ram’s head masks with elegantly spiraled horns, issuing from a beaded collar and joined by finely detailed floral garlands in high relief. The bronze displays excellent depth, crisp chasing, and nuanced surface finishing consistent with high-grade French foundry work of the late 19th century.
The urns rest upon square marble plinth bases applied with decorative ormolu panels and raised on gilt bronze feet, reinforcing their architectural presence.
Originally conceived as ornamental garniture urns circa 1875–1895 during the Louis XVI Revival period of the early Third Republic — a continuation of the historicist taste popularized under Napoleon III — the pieces were later sensitively drilled and electrified, transforming them into striking and functional lighting while preserving their sculptural integrity.
The combination of classical restraint, balanced proportions, and refined gilt bronze detailing exemplifies the enduring appeal of French neoclassical design.
