Very Grand Italian Oil Painting of Young Ballerinas by Ruggero Serrato ( Born 1898), Neapolitan School of Art

Italian painter Ruggero Serrato ( born 1898) was part the 20th century Naples school. The Naples School of Art, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries, was notable for its dramatic expression, naturalism, and intense chiaroscuro, influenced heavily by Caravaggio’s stay in the city. In the early 20th century, the Neapolitan School of Art was not a single, unified group, but rather a term used to describe various artists and artistic styles influenced by Naples. While not as formally structured as other art movements, the Neapolitan School was noted for its emphasis on realism, works are colourful with dark hues.
Serrato shows his talent for “chiaroscuro” in the background of this very large oil on canvas with a continuity of the darker very colourful tonal hues set in contrast to the trio of young ballerinas painted in rich pastel pinks and blues in the “spotlight” of their performance. The wonderful textural brushwork of their costumes reinforces the dynamic quality of their movement. The overall condition is very good considering the age and large size of the painting. An amazing corporate piece or add to the luxury of a stately home.
