Victorian Sterling Silver Mounted Glass Claret Jug by Sheffield Silversmiths William & George Sissons, Dated 1870
Silver Holloware19th Century Victorian sterling silver mounted glass claret jug hallmarked by Sheffield silversmiths, William & George Sissons, dated 1870. The legacy of William Sissons Jr. (1831-1889) and his brother George Sissons (1840-1878) began as W. & G. Sissons in 1858, after their father, William Sissons Sr., and his partner Evan Smith retired. During the Victorian era, the company was well-regarded for its high-quality silverware, including claret jugs, which were popular for serving wine. They had London showrooms in addition to their Sheffield base.
This beautiful and tall sterling silver mounted glass claret jug combines functionality with ornate decoration. Luxurious and functional, an elegant way to decant and serve claret (red Bordeaux wine or other wines) allowing them to breathe before consumption. The spout is the part of the jug through which the wine is poured, and the integrated handle and hinged lid help facilitate a smooth pour while enhancing the vessel’s elegant appearance.
Designed with wonderful sterling silver embossed and chased decoration, neo-classical portrait medallions are interspersed along the circumference. A domed hinged lid cover is engraved with a “C” and surrounded by a circular foliate motif. The intricately pierced thumb piece design, the elegant generous scroll handle and decorated spout complement the clear glass jug meant to highlight the colour of the wine.
A showcase piece for the elaborate design aesthetic of the Victorian era and at the same time a touch of luxury for any dinner party. In excellent condition.
