This dessert service consists of eight plates, and a footed comport.
Both the plates and the serving dish have turquoise blue borders, overlaid with foliate garland, interspersed with raised, gilt dot. The turquoise edges rims are banded, on either side with gold lines. Inside is a wide, cream-coloured band surrounding round, hand-painted, pastoral landscape paintings, surrounded by a raised dot gilt frame.
Each painting depicts a unique scene. Some include figures; others, livestock, a water feature, or a rustic building: but all are finely done, with remarkable detail, and beautiful, natural colour.
The low, round, pedestal base of the comport, rests on four, stylized, inverted column top feet, decorated to match the rims on the tops of the plates.
Royal Worcester is one of England’s pre-eminent china and porcelain manufacturers.
This beautiful dessert service would be a wonderful addition to a collection of fine English china.
Marked: On the back of each plate, with an impressed mark “Worcester” in printed letters, around a circle, topped with a crown, and, on the inside, four ‘w”s, a crescent moon around the number “51”. Further marked with an impressed letter “B”, indicating manufacture in the year 1868 (pictured). The Royal Worcester Book classifies this as a RARE MARK.
